Abstract

Whether we talk about digital transformation or big data, statistics and data science have been in the spotlight. In this talk the speaker will share his thoughts on why this is an exciting time for the statistics profession and why we must address many challenges to stay ahead in the data science era. The speaker will discuss the fast-changing landscape for statistics research and education, and describe some of the important data challenges and research problems that may define our profession in the years ahead. The discussions are aimed at any faculty and students who are interested in the future of statistics and data science.

About the Speaker

Prof. HE Xuming received his PhD in Statistics from University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign in 1989. He joined the University of Michigan as H. C. Carver Collegiate Professor in 2011. His prior appointments include faculty positions at National University of Singapore and University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, and Program Director of Statistics at National Science Foundation. He currently serves as President-Elect of the International Statistical Institute.

Prof. He’s research interests include broad areas of robust statistics, quantile regression, Bayesian methods, subgroup analysis, and post-selection inference. His interdisciplinary research aims to promote the better use of statistics in biosciences, climate studies, concussion research, and social-economic studies.

Prof. He has received many honors and awards including the Founders Award from the American Statistical Association (2021), Distinguished Faculty Achievement Award, University of Michigan (2021), and the Carver Medal from the Institute of Mathematical Statistics (2022) .
