Abstract

Atoms and photons play central roles in quantum physics. In this talk, the speaker will share his experiences for a series of atomic experiments, ranging from alkali-metal atoms for quantum optics, alkaline-earth atoms for ultracold Rydberg physics, and highly magnetic lanthanide atoms for ultracold degenerate gas and quantum many-body physics. The speaker will demonstrate how to generate narrowband paired-photon/single photon with atoms, how to observe long-term atomic Rydberg interactions with narrow transitions, and how to produce Bose-Einstein condensation for high melting temperate atoms. This talk will also include an interdisciplinary subject: surface plasmonic light emission with Scanning Tunneling Microscope (STM).

About the speaker

Prof. CHEN Peng received his PhD from Shanghai Institute of Optics and Fine Mechanics, Chinese Academy of Sciences and is currently a Research Assistant Professor at the Department of Physics in HKUST. His research focuses on multiple experimental fields, including photon pair generation with four-wave mixing, ultracold Rydberg strontium gas, Bose-Einstein condensation of erbium atoms, surface plasmonic light emission with STM.
