Prof. Jianwei SUN from the Department of Chemistry at the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) was recently awarded the Senior Croucher Fellowship 2025 for his outstanding scientific research achievements.
Prof. Sun completed his BSc and MSc in chemistry at Nanjing University before taking his PhD at the University of Chicago. He joined HKUST in 2010.
Prof. Sun specialises in organic synthesis, focusing on developing unconventional and sustainable methods for creating valuable organic molecules, including biologically active molecules such as pharmaceutical intermediates. His research emphasizes chirality, a crucial molecular property where compounds exist as non-superimposable mirror images, affecting their biological activity. He has pioneered innovative methods and invented new catalysts for selective chiral synthesis and precise reaction control. His work holds significant potential for enhancing pharmaceutical development, advancing materials science, and promoting sustainable chemical processes.
